First Lady of the United States is the unofficial but widely accepted term of the wife of the President of the United States during his presidency. Although the role of the first lady was never formally defined, she is a prominent figure in the political and public life of the nation. Martha Custis Washington, was the first lady from April 30, 1789, to March 4, 1797. And ever since then, there have been over 50 first ladies of various ages.
